Perhaps it's simply because the 'bride', Maribel Martin is looks great on film (the scene where the birds are flying behind stands out)....Also I would say the most interesting story line of any of the ones I've seen, it's more of a fucked-up relationship movie with a horror element. (Can we "fuck" on the Internet?)
deadrodentyping.blogspot.comdeadrodentypinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10887259143120181998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13599870.post-35541230137128370922009-08-22T02:57:04.451-04:002009-08-22T02:57:04.451-04:00I think the ultimate "victory" of the me...I think the ultimate "victory" of the men is meant to be tragic and ridiculous. Aranda depicts what is usually a straightforward "good over evil" ending in a way that makes it much, much more ambiguous. Even though the guys "win," they've really lost the sympathy of the audience, turning the whole story into a sort of lesbian "Romeo and Juliet."

Either that or, for all his posturing, he really IS afraid of feminine power, associated with the unseen and the darkness, and feels a subconscious need to try to sabotage even his own attempts to express that power and reclaim a type of masculine authority.

But I really don't think the guys at the end of the story have that authority anymore. Even though they killed the women (the only named characters, note!), the power remains...Carmilla & Susan have gained the loyalty of the audience, and the men just end up looking like mysoginist bastards. What a strong statement of "Girl Power!" in a subtle way, even if the girls have to lose their lives in the process. It is just the beginning of the feminist revolution, after all.

By the way, LOVED the "Yellow Wallpaper" reference! ;)Rhiannahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15802067182851066746noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13599870.post-27574853585934488902008-09-27T15:59:00.000-04:002008-09-27T15:59:00.000-04:00Or listen to it on a portable music player...Or listen to it on a portable music player...Antaeus Feldsparhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11845426339678044179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13599870.post-73576887325756327112008-08-28T23:53:00.000-04:002008-08-28T23:53:00.000-04:00I downloaded Carmilla to my iPhone to read the oth...I downloaded Carmilla to my iPhone to read the other day. Director Vicente Aranda is, in fact, a fairly well known in Spain 'auteur' kind of filmaker, mostly obssessed with sex.

As many of us.

His most famous movie is 'Amantes', a film that even won Spain's best movie of the year award. In the last 5 years, however, his films have been severe failures.Paco Foxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03890794837535005329noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13599870.post-73105663044187686482008-08-28T02:01:00.000-04:002008-08-28T02:01:00.000-04:00Hey, cool.
